Network Requirements

To put a Matter network into operation and network your devices, you need the following:

Hardware Requirements

✅ Wi-Fi Network

  • A standard 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network
  • NOT guest Wi-Fi networks (can cause issues)
  • No portal pages requiring terms of use acceptance

Note on 2.4 GHz: Most IoT devices — including the M2D Bridge and IM Pushbutton Module — connect over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Even if your router also broadcasts a 5 GHz network, these devices require a visible 2.4 GHz SSID to commission and operate. Internally, Matter uses IPv6 link-local addressing automatically — you do not need to configure IPv6 on your router.

✅ Smart Home Hub

Choose any hub such as:

  • Apple HomePod / Apple TV 4K
  • Google Nest Hub
  • Amazon Echo with Matter support
  • Samsung SmartThings
  • Home Assistant (Green/Yellow/Pi+SkyConnect)

Note on hubs: A hub is required for remote access, automations, and persistent scenes. While a very small number of ecosystems technically allow temporary local control without a dedicated hub (e.g. an iPhone acting as a controller on the same network), this is the exception and not suitable for reliable deployments. Always plan on a hub.

✅ Smartphone or Tablet

For commissioning via the corresponding home app.

Required Network Settings

Configure these settings on your router to ensure Matter devices can communicate:

mDNS (Multicast) - Must be enabled for device communication

IGMP Snooping - Disable on your router; many consumer routers implement this incorrectly, causing multicast traffic to be silently dropped

MAC Filtering - Must be disabled

Client Isolation - Must be disabled for device traffic

⚠️ Multicast Filtering - Set to “low” or “off”

Wi-Fi Terms/Portal Pages - Must be deactivated

vLAN Setup - Recommended: Use separate “IoT” vLAN

Enterprise WPA - Must be disabled for office installations
