IPv6 multicast not blocked

Matter uses IPv6 link-local addressing internally — the router must not block IPv6 multicast traffic (no need to enable global IPv6)

mDNS (multicast) enabled

Essential for Matter device discovery

IGMP snooping disabled on router

Many consumer routers implement this incorrectly, causing mDNS to silently fail — disable it

Check your access point's maximum client limit — most consumer APs handle up to ~50 clients reliably; enterprise APs handle significantly more

No known bandwidth limitations

Ensure sufficient bandwidth for all devices

Infrastructure

Firewall rules allow Matter traffic

Ports 5353 (mDNS) and Matter ports must be open

DHCP server active and reachable

Matter devices use DHCP — a working DHCP server on the same network segment is required

Network documentation received

Schematics, IP plans, and configurations
